I forwarded these pictures and my concern to the following agencies on Monday, November 7, 2005. Children returned to this school as of November 4, 2005. November is

Must this be a child lying by the crosswalk before they act?

6 Days since school opened after Wilma.

Gloria Floyd Elementary School

Another Crosswalk, sign on the walkway

Warning down and trash piled high to make it worse.

The waste is higher than the car.

I am once again writing to point out what I feel is a problem in my community crying out for HELP. This morning I went out again with my camera to show you that there is still a lot that needs to be looked at in the community. Our children and their safety should be the number 1 priority, in my humble opinion. School has been open since last week now and the below pictures will confirm that as of today, this condition exists over two weeks after the hurricane. School Safety sign are still down and bent over. HUGE pile of cut waste is piled right at the crosswalk these children us coming to and from school. WHAT ARE YOU PEOPLE THINKING OF ? I saw trucks picking up waste not 10 blocks from this school this same morning! I think school maintenance could have and should have fixed the downed signs. Where are the priorities? I know there is a big job out there that needs done but someone needs to determine priorities. Hospitals, schools and needed government buildings first and then the rest of us. This is not rocket science, it is common sense. I did receive a response dated October 13, 2005, from Kathleen Woods-Richardson, Director of Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management. This response was to my e-mail concerning the way the waste pick up in August. I was right to have been concerned as early as I was then before Katrina hit as I am now after Wilma has also; hit. We need to be proactive not reactive to hurricanes in this county. We know they are coming every year. I am pleased to see FEMA finally got at least a temporary director that understands disasters. What do we have to change here?
